Philosophy of Music Education

Music, by its very nature, enhances the lives of young people. (To) music is human. Through musical gestures we communicate feelings and things that we can hardly begin to describe with words. It is one means by which we connect to the people and world around us. Given that we are naturally driven to connect with our universe, it follows that music is an integral component of being human.

If music is an integral component of being human, then we must learn all that we can about music. Learning about music helps us communicate more effectively about music and helps us understand music's power. Through education generally, society aims to equip its members with the tools and knowledge for lifelong learning.

Music education is therefore integral to education since it is how we equip students with the tools and knowledge to talk about and communicate about music more effectively and therefore more effectively connect with each other and their world through music.

What does this philosophy look like in the piano classroom?

In the piano classroom, students build skills that are fundamental to improved creating, performing, responding to, and connecting with music. Class starts with a bell ringer video that demonstrates various aspects of piano technique or applications of piano keyboard knowledge. A discussion focused on the bell ringer builds a broad base of musical vocabulary and bridges between colloquial and academic musical terms. During the remainder of class, students work on a wide variety of projects, including developing music theory knowledge, fine-tuning piano technique, improving musical reading, and developing and applying aural listening skills to learning songs. Repertoire ranges from Bach to Hip-Hop. As a final, year-long project, each student researches and performs a song of their choice, learned by ear and through music reading, often adapted to become the students' own creations.

Through this class, students learn skills that will enable them to better communicate about and participate in all ways of knowing and doing music.
